CERAMICS

I am a studio potter focusing on creating unique and functional wheel thrown items. I use a variety of clays to make simple cups, bowls, vases, wind-chimes and garden stacks. Hand carved textured surfaces, layered slips and glazes feature strongly in my work.

More About You

I trace my love of this medium to a few glorious childhood days when my brothers and I worked a mud pie bakery behind our tiny Mt Isa flat. Our equipment – a hose, a stack of old wooden pallets and the dry, hot dirt. Our joyful venture came to a grinding halt with Mum deciding the pallet pile did not meet health and safety requirements, and the landlord not appreciating the numerous lumps of dried mud on his very useful pallets.

Some 45 years later, after careers in custom dressmaking and primary school teaching, clay came back into my life while studying visual art at TAFE. I flirted with painting and printmaking but it was in the ceramic arts studio that I had a sense of homecoming; of returning to the right medium for me.

Later, at MACG, I was introduced to the many highs and lows of wheel work. This remains a passion. Altering the thrown form and perfecting my throwing skills is now my pursuit. I strive to make items which have both aesthetic and functional value.
