Sonia’s childhood fascination for art and nature led her to complete a Diploma in Fine Arts majoring in Pottery at the Seven Hills Art College in Brisbane Queensland.
Following some 40 years’ experience she now specializes as a Ceramic Sculptor, receiving multiple awards including two from exhibits at Royal Queensland Shows. Whilst focused on an extensive variety of clay creations she is greatly influenced by life on Bribie Island and many of her current works have concentrated on capturing and accentuating certain animal expressions.

Over time Sonia has been an active member of Hervey Bay Potters and currently Bribie Potters based at the Bribie Island Arts Centre (BICAS) where she is a member of the committee as Projects Officer, Team Leader and Teacher.
She has recently facilitated installations including a major Totem Pole Outdoor Garden Setting at BICAS, and managed the production of some thirty fauna sculptures to adorn the surroundings at the Bribie Island Model Engineers and Live Steamers Association (MELSA) at Melsa Park Bribie Island.
In collaboration with her husband Derek, they created a wire sculpture of Mathew Flinders, Bongaree his Aboriginal Guide, and Trim the Cat. The sculpture commissioned by the Bribie Island Historical Association is now exhibited outside the Bribie Island Museum. The sculpture of Bongaree is believed the first in Australia.
Sonia’s artistic expression manifests itself through the love of bold colour and the use of blended construction techniques. The majority of her pieces, whilst hand-built, also incorporate a combination of hand, press moulds, slab and wheel work.
Through clay, she captures the essence of Bribie Island in a way that is both personal and universally recognizable, making her a valued artistic voice within the community.
